Visualizing Sound

Visualizing Sound

In this innovative setup, guitar strings' vibrations are made visible by a rotating drum with white lines engraved on a black surface. When the strings are strummed, the drum is spun, causing the white lines to scan the strings. The rotating lines capture the profile of each vibrating string segment at different instants, and as the string moves slightly sideways during its vibrations, the persisting image appears as a solid wavy line. This dynamic scanning process reveals distinct sinusoidal wave patterns for each string, showcasing the visual representation of their frequencies. Essentially, this inventive system transforms the invisible vibrations of guitar strings into observable and mesmerizing waveforms, enhancing our understanding and appreciation of the relationship between motion and sound.
